What is a Silver Health Plan in Health Insurance?

<lingo>A Silver Health Plan is one of the four categories of plans offered through the Health Insurance Marketplace.  Silver Health Plans offer an option that's in the middle, falling between Bronze and Gold Plans. With a Silver Plan, you will pay moderate premium costs, have moderate deductibles and pay moderate costs out-of-pocket when you need care. Under a Silver Health Plan, your costs may be less if you qualify for extra savings that are known as cost sharing reductions. Silver Plans are the most common plan chosen by those who purchase health insurance coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace.</lingo>

Silver Health Plan Explained

Individuals may choose different levels of health insurance plans through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Plan levels are categorized into four tiers. Sometimes called "metal levels," the tiers are organized not according to the quality of care offered, but by the way in which the cost of the plan is split between you and the insurance provider.

In each category, the insurance provider pays a different percentage of your yearly cost of care. You pay the rest, depending on which metal level you choose. These costs may include premiums, deductibles, co-payments, co-insurance and other out-of-pocket expenses.

Silver Health Plans fall in the middle, between Bronze and Gold Plans. When you choose a Silver Plan, expect to pay moderate premium and out-of-pocket costs. In contrast, Bronze Plans require you to pay lower monthly premiums, but cost more when you need care. As compared to Silver Plans, Gold and Platinum Plans offer higher monthly premium costs, but lower costs when you need care.

If you qualify for cost-sharing reductions, you must choose a Silver Plan to take advantage of the extra savings. This is a good choice if you anticipate using a lot of care during the year.

You can choose from a variety of plan options and range of provider organizations within the Silver level. If you're looking for a moderate cost option and qualify for cost-sharing reductions, a Silver Health Plan may be the right choice for you.
